Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Wednesday, July 15, 2009
here's the bottom line: if you've read the book, this one might be a let down. if not...hurray! haha. it seems to me that the plot makes sense and things look pretty cool, so if you don't mind certain parts being changed/not in there, its a thumbs up. here's what i liked:
  1. ron (aka won-won). rupert grint is hilarious. he does a great job. he will make you laugh either at his girl problems, his girl problems, or his...uh, girl problems. there's other stuff too. no worries.
  2. dumbledore's semi-affectionate nature. the movie dumbledore is way different from the book one. he's a bit more fierce. a bit more bold. there haven't really been many harry and professor one on one pep talks. there was a bit more of a connection between the two of them in this one.
  3. lavendar brown. whoever played her was fabulous. she knew she could get away with over-the-top and sold it.
  4. cinematography. this movie looked cool. in the same arena, i give props to the visual effects people and production design. i think it was almost a character in and of itself.
  5. we saw more of london.
on the list of negatives i have this to say: where was the quiddich cup? why can't ron and herminone (or the film) at least acknowledge their decision to be together? why did snape have to look like an even bigger jerk that he's already made out to be? (SPOILER) what was with the weasley's house being on fire? where did neville's lines go? - he always makes me laugh. and what...what, what, what was with the ending?

hopefully i haven't ruined this for those yet to see it. haha. i promise i really did like it. and like i said, if you didn't know what was missing, i'm sure it was fantastic. i'd say possibly the best potter film yet. now, here's something new, i figure maybe we can get some conversation going on this blog instead of it being a one way communication..

sound off: if you've seen the movie...what did you think? what are you hoping for the next film? what did you think they should have included in the movie that wasn't in the book? and if you don't care about any of this...find the nearest book, open it to the 53rd page, find the 7th sentence and post it in a comment. should be interesting.

Did you notice how when Harry and Dumbledore were in D's office talking about Horcruxes and Harry did the neck twist thing? And then Dumbledore said "I think I just found another one"???? I forgot to tell you that last night. It is WAY a HUGE clue and I love that Yates is pulling that through from the 5th movie.

I did miss that there wasn't anything with the newb minister of magic and I really missed the ending battle. And I can't remember if I said this to you, but I think the romance thing between Tonks and Lupin could have been better explained. Oh, and Quiddich.

Oh, and, "Hungry Joe could no longer stand the strain of waiting for shipping orders and crumbled promptly into ruin every time he finished another tour of duty."

hm...no, i didn't get that one. haha.

what book are you reading?

Samantha said...

I'm not reading that book. It just happened to be the one closest to me when I read your post.

First off, Sam pointed me in the direction of your blog, because apparently she felt your discussion needed more people. And she knew that I would want to discuss the movie (I just saw it for the first time), but unfortunately discussion partners are rather scarce at 1:30 in the morning.

Sam, I also liked the Horcrux hint with the neck twist in Dumbledore's office. I wonder what someone who hasn't read the books would get out of that.

I liked movie-Dumbledore a bit more this time around, but that really isn't saying much because I have had a fairly intense loathing of movie-Dumbledore (version 2, of course) in the past.

Did anyone think that Hermione seemed to be a much more prominent character compared to Ron. Whenever Harry was having an important conversation, instead of a comedic moment, it was always with Hermione (i.e., the final scene). I thought that was a bit strange and disappointing. I would've liked to see Ron develop into more than a "funny side-kick."

And Sam, is the quote from Catch-22?

thanks, Kaia.

i'd agree with the Hermione comment. Ron does always get the laughs...but i think he did way more in this one than any other.

our other roommates just went and saw it yesterday so that was a different perspective. i think sammi really like it, and she's never read the book. tina thought it was good but sort of came to the same conclusion as us. and then we all watched the fifth movie, because sammi hadn't seen it yet, and i think that one's the best, after watching it again. how bout you guys?

also, i read an interview with the HP producer and he says that the battle scene in 7 is going to be aprox. 30 minutes. i can't tell if that's a lot of time, or not enough. i spose a fourth or fifth of the movie?

Okay, well I didn't like the 5th movie as much because I loved the 5th book. I liked the stuff with sirius, which I don't think the movie did justice to. Also I hate Hate HATE that the last thing Sirius says to movie Harry is something like "Nice shot,James!" I'm sorry, but ?!?!. I understand that they wanted to show that S was confusing H for his father, but come on. They completely didn't explain that properly. And I cry during that death scene in the book, practically every time. And in the movie I didn't feel it. So yeah, I would have to say I like the 6th the best.

As far as the 30 minute war scene, it DID take up a lot of the end of the book. Do you think they will cut to things like the students sneaking in and Snape scenes and stuff? Also, if would really be like a 8th or 10th of the movie, right? since it is split in two?

Ans Catch-22 = yes

Hayley said...

yeah...i know you hate the last thing sirius says. lol. i can hear you saying it in my head with vengeance.

if they split the book into two movies, the battle scene will be like a fourth of one of the movies is what i was trying to say. haha. who knows how it'll actually end up. supposedly, according to IMBD, 7 part 1 is coming out next November (2010) and the part 2 will be out July 2011.

just saw this and thought it went along with the convo:

"The first movie is a road movie basically," Yates said of "Deathly Hallows: Part I", which will hit U.S. theaters on November 19, 2010. "It's quite intense and very raw. We're way away from Hogwarts and it's a bit like three refugees being pursued across the landscape by these terrible death eaters."

For the second movie, which will be released on July 15, 2011, Yates claimed it will be similar to "Lord of the Rings". "Part two is a big opera basically, a great big epic with huge battles," the director explained further.

1) I also really, really hated Sirius' death scene in the fifth movie for the exact same reason.

2) My sisters and I were discussing the other day where we predicted they would stop the first part of Deathly Hallows and begin the second. We decided maybe when Ron comes back and destroys the Horcrux. The reformation of the trio would definitely have a sense of resolution to end a movie. The other option would be at Shell Cottage after burying Dobby. It could be a bittersweet ending. If I remember the seventh book right, they bury Dobby, but that is also when Lupin shows up and is all excited about having a son. Any thoughts?

3) Yates said that the last movie will be done in LOTR epic battle style. While that sounds exciting, did anyone else feel like parts of this movie (the cave scene and the final scene) were a bit LOTR-esque?

Samantha said...

I must agree that the cave scene was particularly LOTRish. Especially when Harry is pulled under by Inferi.

Though I feel like in LOTR the battle scenes were...I don't know...boring...There were so many people involved, that I didn't really feel anything for anyone, you know?

I hope that isn't the case in HP. I'm sure they won't be boring though, because they will be fighting with magic and not swords and arrows, which I believe, by definition, makes it more fun and interesting.

Hayley said...

haha. umm...i could never make it through the first LOTR movie, so i can't compare. sorry!
